I saw this on one of my email lists with encouragement to pass it on:
- My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful.
- Give me time to understand what you want of me.
- Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being.
- Don’t be angry with me for long and don’t lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment, but I have only you.
- Talk to me. Even if I don’t understand your words, I do understand your voice when speaking to me.
- Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.
- Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I could hurt you, and yet, I choose not to bite you.
- Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I’m not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old or weak.
- Please take care of me when I grow old. You too, will grow old.
- On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say you can’t bear to watch. Don’t make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you so.

Well said. Its always nice to remind ourselves of things like this. While our pets are not human they have feelings just like we do.

Veru touching 10 pet commandments…I really appreciate number 4. Don’t be angry with me for long and don’t lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment, but I have only you…Yeah its true we have all but our beloved pet only have us and nothing but us…being loyal to us since we have them…

number ten choked me up all over again and it was like 6 years ago now.

I especially agree with #10. I have had to put down several pets and even though it is difficult to say goodbye, I feel a responsibility to be with the pet during its last moments.

love number 5 “Talk to me”-I have a dog walking business in Sydney-I find talking to a dog especially on my first walk with them makes a huge difference.I use a very soft voice and constantly praise them for good actions they do-there hearing is really great a loud voice is not required-great post-if we all followed those ten commandments our pets would have a more happier life.

It is true that dogs are very special and they ask so little of us. They deserve our love and effection as well as taking care of their basic needs. They may not live as long as we do, but it doesn’t mean that their lives are insignificant. Great post!

When I read this.. I cried. My Sheltie is 15 yrs old and she has been the most wonderful companion. She is deaf now, can’t see in the dark & has some dementia. When she goes on her ultimate journey, I will be with her. She’s my shadow & loves me as much as I love her..if not more. T/Y for this touching post.
