The Grey Muzzle Organization

I’ve been meaning to write about this for several weeks, but kept forgetting. OK, so you all know that my mind is nothing but mush!

Our readers will know that Barbara and I have a very special place in our hearts and home for senior Shelties—all senior dogs, in fact.

Well, I recently (alright…not that recently) ran across The Grey Muzzle Organization , a group whose focus is senior dogs. Here’s an excerpt from their front page:

The Grey Muzzle Organization improves the lives of at-risk senior dogs by providing funding and resources to animal shelters, rescue organizations, sanctuaries, and other non-profit groups nationwide.

We are not a shelter or rescue group. Rather, Grey Muzzle funds programs such as hospice care, senior dog adoption, medical screening, and other special programs to help old dogs at animal welfare organizations across the country. Distributed through grants, all funds are provided through our fundraising efforts and the generosity of public donations.

Check it out. Of course, bring a box of tissues with you, ’cause (if you’re like me) you’ll have tears streaming down your cheeks in no time.

It’s really great to know that there are people so dedicated to the care of seniors, which are undoubtedly the most throw-away creatures in our society’s throw-away culture.

  • That’s a really cool organization. Are the grants that they make available something that SRU could apply for? You and Barbara certainly always have seniors in your care!

  • Marie, thanks for the suggestion. I hadn’t noticed that they make grants, but I found the link right after reading your comment. Needless to say, as soon as we get home from the National, Barbara plans to decide whether we’re likely to be eligible for a grant from them! Thanks!!

  • Hi Sheltie Rescue of Utah folks! This is Julie at The Grey Muzzle Organization. Glad to hear that you guys are so passionate about the seniors. I fostered a SWEET little sheltie mix myself a few years ago…. As you probably discovered, grants are closed now for the summer, and although we’ll make more grants in the fall, we’re unlikely to open it up again for new applicants because we received so many good ones this spring. However….sometimes we do a “special invitation” for a grant application. If you like, tell me a little more about what you guys are doing for the seniors!
