I Am The Old Dog

This came from John “Mondo” Perkins of The Wild Bunch. John’s a great story-teller whose material has appeared in this blog on previous occasions, as well as a Sheltie (and other breed) rescuer.

I Am The Old Dog

I am the old dog, so I don’t play like I use to
I am the old dog, so I don’t see like I use to
I am the old dog, so I don’t hear like I use to
I am the old dog, so I sit and lay around a lot now
I am the old dog, so I forget things now
I am the old dog, so I’m not as fast doing things any more like I use to
I am the old dog, so I don’t show how much you mean to me all the time like I use to
I am the old dog, so I’m not as pretty as I use to be
I am the old dog, so I do have more medical problems than I use to
I am the old dog, so I have more pain than I use to
I am the old dog, so I don’t respond to you like I use to
I am the old dog, so I don’t make you laugh any more like I use to
I am the old dog, so I am a burden to everybody
I am the old dog, so I am unadoptable
I am the old dog, so I’m not cost effective
I am the old dog, so it’s ok to send me to an animal shelter to be put to sleep or just dump me out in the country

Now change the word “dog” to “human” and what you have is a news story for CNN. The shame of it is that this will only be read by people that love dogs and not the many hundreds that everyday take the one thing that has loved them, no matter what they have done, to a place where they will undoubtedly die. They do this so their conscience will be clear as they think, someone will adopt the animal. We in rescue know different.

Mondo, for his over 12 year old dogs:
